  • Kate Fletcher

    Owner, Creator

Raised on porridge and song in a family of eccentric musicians in Reading. Wrote my first song at 19. Bought a Narrowboat to live on. Everyone said it was a phase. I still have the boat. More here! http://ancientmusic.co.uk/about_us.html

  • Corwen Broch

Corwen grew up in Dorset with his grandparents who were The Last Of The Victorians. Thus he was instilled with a love of spartan living, open fires and outside toilets. More here: http://ancientmusic.co.uk/about_us.html

Shop policies

Welcome to our shop. We endeavour to make quality musical instruments and crafts from natural materials. Wherever possible we source these materials locally and prepare many ourselves. We tan almost all of our own rawhide from the skins of deer culled locally, we prepare our own bone for flutes and crafts and buy almost entirely naturally shed antler from reputable estates. All our wood is from FSC registered suppliers.

We ourselves live a low impact lifestyle in caravans and a narrowboat and try to ensure our products have a minimal environmental impact wherever possible. This extends to the use of natural plant based wood stains and finishing with oils rather than chemical varnishes wherever possible.

We are fascinated by the ancient music and instruments of Northern Europe and hope to provide reasonably priced playable instruments for musicians and reenactors.

We also run a programme of instrument making and playing workshops, so get in touch and join our mailing list if you are in the UK.

We accept Paypal or UK cheques in £ sterling. Please get in touch before sending us a cheque so we can tell you who to make it out to and where to send it, plus reserve your item!

Shipping

We always ship items with insured post. This may cost the customer a little more, but means we can always promptly replace any items lost in the post without quibbling (* see the note below about incorrect addresses). Please inform us if you do not receive your item within 40 days of ordering as there is sometimes a limited window of time within which to claim on the insurance. If you do not inform us within 40 days we may be unable to refund you. It may also take longer to replace one off or bespoke items or complex stringed instruments than to replace stock items.

Note that we can only estimate delivery times, as these vary wildly from country to country and at different times of year. Items may be held up in customs and we cannot be liable for any losses incurred as part of customs processes. We endeavour to ensure that packages conform with import/export restrictions, but it is up to the customer to understand the laws and regulations applying to their own jurisdictions and not order goods which cannot be legally imported into their country.

Customers should be aware they may be liable to pay import duties or customs charges or handling charges, and we are not responsible for predicting or paying these charges.

We endeavour to deliver products as fast as possible, but we are only part time craftspeople who both work other jobs (as a school music teacher and an educator in a museum) and so sometimes things take a little longer than we'd like. We endeavour to despatch goods within 28 days of receiving your order. If you require an item urgently, please get in touch BEFORE placing your order.

Important: Please note that any orders sent out that are returned to us as undelivered for whatever reason (e.g. requiring a signature, recipient not at home or address incorrect) will be returned to stock and refunded. The original postage cost will not be refunded in these cases.)

It is difficult to work out what an item will cost to ship given the variety of postage charges around the world and the potential weight of packaging, changes in courier charge schedules and the weight of items made to order which may not be known when the order os placed. Should the postage to you be more than we estimated when we listed the item, we reserve the right to request additional postage be paid and/or the right to cancel the transaction and refund your payments.

Many thanks.
